When did the San Francisco Giants face the Oakland A's in the first all-Bay Area World Series?

The story behind the answer

The San Francisco Giants faced the Oakland Athletics in the first all-Bay Area World Series in 1989. The matchup was known as the “Bay Bridge Series,” “Battle of the Bay,” and “Earthquake Series.”

Oakland swept San Francisco four games to none, winning its first World Series since 1974. The series was historically unusual because the two franchises had previously met in the 1905, 1911, and 1913 World Series, when the Giants were based in New York and the Athletics were based in Philadelphia.

The most dramatic event occurred before Game 3 on October 17, 1989. The magnitude 6.9 Loma Prieta earthquake struck the Bay Area, damaging both stadiums and postponing the game for 10 days. Game 3 was eventually played at San Francisco's Candlestick Park on October 27.

The Athletics won Game 4 the next day to complete the sweep. Dave Stewart, Oakland's starting pitcher, was named World Series MVP. The series remains the only World Series featuring two teams from the San Francisco Bay Area.
