WhatsApp users register with a mobile telephone number. The number serves as the account’s primary identity and is verified during setup, traditionally through an SMS or automated phone call.

This design helped WhatsApp grow from a simple phonebook-based messenger into a large communications network. Instead of requiring a separate username, users could discover contacts whose numbers were already stored in their address books. It also meant that changing a phone number could affect account continuity, so WhatsApp provides tools for changing numbers while preserving account information in supported circumstances.

A phone number is not the same as a password or a public display name. WhatsApp has added optional security measures, including two-step verification and, in newer versions, passkeys in some contexts. These strengthen account protection, but they do not replace the mobile number used for registration.

The number-based system also creates privacy considerations. People who know a user’s number may be able to identify that the person uses WhatsApp, depending on settings and circumstances.
