What's Barbie's middle name?

The story behind the answer

Barbie’s middle name is Millicent, making her full name Barbara Millicent Roberts.

The name belongs to Barbie’s fictional character biography rather than being a detail printed prominently on most dolls. Barbie was created by Mattel co-founder Ruth Handler, who named the character after her daughter, Barbara. The surname Roberts was later used in books and other Barbie stories to give the doll a fuller identity.

Barbie debuted at the New York Toy Fair on March 9, 1959. Her design was influenced by Bild Lilli, a German fashion doll, but Barbie became a distinct Mattel character with her own fictional family, friends, career history and relationship with Ken Carson.

People sometimes remember only “Barbara Roberts” or assume that Barbie is her entire name. Millicent is the middle name in the character’s established full name. Ken also has a longer name—Kenneth Sean Carson—but he is generally known by his nickname, just as Barbara is almost always called Barbie.
