What youth soccer club did Landon Donovan play for?
Answer
Bayer Leverkusen
Answer
Bayer Leverkusen
Landon Donovan played youth soccer for Bayer Leverkusen in Germany. The club signed the American teenager in 1999 after its sporting director, Michael Reschke, saw him perform at a youth tournament in Europe.
Donovan joined Leverkusen at about 17 and initially played in the club’s youth and reserve setup rather than becoming an immediate first-team star. He found life in Germany difficult and spent time training with United States youth teams. His early European experience is sometimes described simply as playing for Bayer Leverkusen, even though much of his competitive work came with the reserve side.
Donovan later returned to the United States on loan, joining the San Jose Earthquakes in 2001. That move launched his MLS career: he helped San Jose win MLS Cup titles in 2001 and 2003 before becoming a defining player for the Los Angeles Galaxy and the U.S. national team. His other European clubs included Bayern Munich and Everton, but Bayer Leverkusen was his formative German club.
