Standing in Malmö, Sweden, Turning Torso is a residential skyscraper designed by Santiago Calatrava. It was officially opened on 27 August 2005 and became one of Scandinavia’s most recognizable modern buildings. The tower’s form is based on a twisting human torso, translating one of Calatrava’s sculptural ideas into a full-scale high-rise.

The building is organized into nine segments, each made of five-story pentagonal sections that rotate progressively around a central structural core. From the bottom to the top, the highest segment turns 90 degrees clockwise relative to the ground-floor orientation. This creates the illusion that the tower is rotating, although it is a fixed structure.

Turning Torso is located in the Western Harbour district, an area redeveloped from former industrial land. It was built as part of Malmö’s urban renewal and helped give the waterfront a new identity. The dates in the alternatives belong to other Calatrava projects or do not match the tower’s opening year.
