What year was the Park Güell officially opened as a public park? Park Güell officially opened as a public park in 1926.
The site began as an ambitious private residential development commissioned by entrepreneur Eusebi Güell. Gaudí planned landscaped streets, communal spaces and distinctive architectural features on Barcelona’s Carmel Hill, but the housing project failed to attract enough buyers. Construction ran from 1900 to 1914.
After Güell’s death in 1918, his heirs negotiated the property’s sale to Barcelona City Council. The municipality converted the unfinished development into a public park, which opened to residents and visitors in 1926. Gaudí’s former home on the grounds later became the Gaudí House Museum.
The year can be confused with 1914, when major construction ended, or 1984, when UNESCO included Park Güell within the World Heritage listing “Works of Antoni Gaudí.” Those dates mark different stages in the site’s history.
