What year was the original Star Wars: Battlefront released?

The story behind the answer

The original Star Wars: Battlefront was released in 2004. Developed by Pandemic Studios and published by LucasArts, it was the first game in the Star Wars: Battlefront series.

The game launched in September 2004 for Windows, PlayStation 2, and Xbox, timed to coincide with the release of the Star Wars Trilogy DVD set. Players fight across locations from the films as ordinary soldiers in opposing factions, including the Rebel Alliance, Galactic Empire, Galactic Republic, and Separatists.

Its main mode is Conquest, in which teams capture and hold command posts while reducing the opposing side's reinforcement count. Galactic Conquest adds strategic planning between battles. Unlike its sequel, the original Battlefront generally does not allow players to control Jedi as standard playable units.

Players sometimes confuse this release with Star Wars: Battlefront II, which followed in 2005, or with the later Electronic Arts Battlefront reboot released in 2015. The 2004 title was made by Pandemic Studios, while the 2015 reboot was developed by EA DICE. A Mac version arrived in 2005, followed by a mobile version later that year.
