What year was the original Ford Mustang introduced?

The story behind the answer

What year was the original Ford Mustang introduced? The original Ford Mustang was introduced in 1964. Ford unveiled it on April 17, 1964, at the New York World’s Fair, launching one of the most influential American cars of the twentieth century.

The Mustang entered production at Ford’s Dearborn plant on March 9, 1964, and was initially offered as a two-door hardtop and convertible. A fastback joined the lineup later that year. Its compact Falcon-based platform, long hood and short rear deck helped create the “pony car” formula: sporty styling and performance in a relatively affordable package.

The main source of confusion is the label “1964½ Mustang.” Early cars appeared months before the normal 1965 model year, and enthusiasts use that nickname for them. Ford, however, marketed and VIN-coded those cars as 1965 models. The introduction date remains 1964, and the Mustang’s first-year sales exceeded 400,000 units, far beyond Ford’s expectations.
