What year was the business simulation game Lemonade Stand originally created?

The story behind the answer

The business simulation game Lemonade Stand was originally created in 1973.

Bob Jamison developed the game for the Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium, or MECC, for time-shared mainframe computers. It turned the familiar idea of a child running a lemonade stand into a simple exercise in budgeting, pricing and decision-making.

Players choose how much lemonade to make, what price to charge and how much to spend on advertising. Weather and other random events affect sales, so the game teaches that business results depend on both planning and circumstances. A standard game runs for 12 rounds, representing successive days.

The 1973 date refers to the original mainframe creation, not the later home-computer release. The game became much better known after Charlie Kellner ported it to the Apple II in 1979, after which Apple included it with computers during the 1980s. That later date is the most common source of confusion.
