What year was the BMW X3 first introduced?

The BMW X3 was first introduced in 2003. Its first generation, known internally as the E83, was developed as a smaller companion to BMW’s X5 and used the 3 Series platform.

BMW presented the X3 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2003. Magna Steyr manufactured the first-generation vehicles in Graz, Austria, under contract, making the X3 an important early example of BMW expanding its premium SUV lineup beyond the larger X5.

The 2003 date refers to the model’s introduction and start of first-generation production, not the later facelift. BMW updated the E83 in 2005 and gave it a more substantial facelift in 2006–07. The X3 also helped establish BMW’s “Sports Activity Vehicle” terminology and later generations were built in locations including Spartanburg, South Carolina.
