What year was 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer' published?

The story behind the answer

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was published in 1876.

Mark Twain’s novel first appeared in Britain in June 1876, with the earliest publication date commonly given as June 9. It follows Tom Sawyer, a mischievous boy growing up along the Mississippi River in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, based largely on Hannibal, Missouri, where Twain spent part of his childhood.

The book’s publication history can create confusion because the American Publishing Company issued its illustrated American edition later, in December 1876. That later edition is often discussed in bibliographies, but the novel itself was already in print earlier that year.

Tom Sawyer became one of Twain’s most successful books during his lifetime. Its blend of childhood adventure, humor, satire, and local memory helped establish Tom and Huckleberry Finn as enduring American literary characters. Huckleberry Finn later received his own novel, first published in 1884.
