Metallica was formed in 1981.

The band began in Los Angeles when drummer Lars Ulrich placed an advertisement in the music newspaper The Recycler seeking musicians interested in playing heavy metal. James Hetfield answered, and the pair became the foundation of the group. Metallica’s official formation is generally dated to October 28, 1981.

The band’s earliest lineup changed quickly. Guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist Ron McGovney were early members, while Cliff Burton and Kirk Hammett joined before Metallica recorded its first landmark albums. The group soon became associated with the fast, aggressive style that developed into thrash metal.

A common mix-up is confusing the band’s formation year with the year of its debut album. Metallica’s first studio album, Kill ’Em All, was released in 1983, two years after the band formed. Its early demos and live performances helped establish the group before that album brought its music to a much wider audience.

Metallica later became one of thrash metal’s “Big Four,” alongside Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax. The band moved from Los Angeles to the San Francisco Bay Area early in its career, but 1981 remains the accepted formation year.
