Sydney's first organized New Year's Eve fireworks display over Sydney Harbour took place in 1976.
The celebration helped establish the harbour as an international New Year's Eve setting, with the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House providing its defining backdrop. The city later developed multiple shows, including an earlier family-friendly display and a major midnight event.
Sydney's festivities are especially prominent because Australia reaches January 1 before many major cities in Europe and North America. The fireworks are coordinated with harbour vessels, bridges, and shoreline viewing areas, making the event both a local celebration and a widely broadcast spectacle.
The year 2000 is often remembered because Sydney hosted a particularly famous millennium celebration, but it was not the beginning of the harbour fireworks tradition. The annual display predates that event by more than two decades.
