The Who released their debut album, My Generation, in 1965.
The album arrived in the United Kingdom on 3 December 1965, during the band's early “Maximum R&B” period. It captured The Who before their later concept albums and ambitious studio productions, emphasizing aggressive guitar, feedback, loud dynamics, and rhythm-and-blues influences. The lineup was Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon, with pianist Nicky Hopkins also contributing.
My Generation followed the success of the singles “I Can't Explain” and “My Generation,” the latter reaching number two in the United Kingdom before the album appeared. The record was produced by Shel Talmy and released by Brunswick Records in Britain. In the United States, a revised edition appeared in 1966 under the title The Who Sings My Generation, with different artwork and a slightly altered track listing.
Although the band later regarded the LP as something of a rushed studio snapshot, its hard-edged sound became highly influential. It reached number five on the UK Albums Chart and is now often viewed as an important precursor to punk, hard rock, and heavy metal.
