Tesla announced the acquisition on August 1, 2016, proposing an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $2.6 billion. The deal aligned with Tesla's stated ambition to move beyond cars and promote a broader transition to sustainable energy, combining electric vehicles, batteries and solar generation under one company.

Shareholders approved the transaction in November 2016, and the acquisition closed on November 21, 2016. SolarCity's solar business was subsequently reorganized as part of Tesla Energy, which also includes products such as Powerwall home batteries and larger-scale energy storage systems.

SolarCity had been founded in 2006 by cousins Lyndon Rive and Peter Rive. Elon Musk, who was Tesla's chief executive, was also SolarCity's chairman, making the transaction especially prominent—and controversial—among investors. The acquisition year is sometimes confused with the 2015 launch of Tesla's Powerwall, but those were separate events.
