G. W. Pabst’s silent film Pandora’s Box first appeared in 1929.
The German film was directed by Georg Wilhelm Pabst and stars Louise Brooks as Lulu. It is adapted primarily from Frank Wedekind’s plays Earth Spirit and Pandora’s Box, which follow the rise and fall of the provocative Lulu character.
The movie belongs to the late silent-film era, shortly before sound cinema became dominant. Its visual style, psychological drama, and treatment of sexuality place it within the cultural world of the Weimar Republic. Although its reception was mixed and censorship affected its circulation, later critics recognized it as an important film.
The year can be confused with the dates of related works. Wedekind’s plays predate the film, while later restorations and revivals introduced the movie to new audiences decades after its original release. The 1929 date refers to Pabst’s film itself.
