Cartier opened its first boutique in the United States in 1909.
Pierre Cartier established Cartier’s New York branch at 712 Fifth Avenue, following earlier exploratory visits to the American market. The location gave the French jewellery house a permanent base for serving wealthy American clients, including prominent families and financiers.
The 1909 date is sometimes mixed up with 1917, when Cartier moved from 712 Fifth Avenue to the former Morton F. Plant mansion at 653 Fifth Avenue. That landmark building became the company’s famous New York headquarters, but it was not the first American boutique.
The New York branch was one of three key Cartier houses, alongside Paris and London. The three Cartier brothers managed the international expansion: Louis directed Paris, Jacques oversaw London, and Pierre built the American business. This structure helped Cartier develop distinct but connected creative and commercial centres.
