This combination helped BMW enter the growing luxury SUV market without abandoning its performance-oriented identity.

A common mix-up is confusing the 1999 introduction with the 2000 model year. Production began in 1999, while many markets listed the vehicle as a 2000 model. The E53 remained in production until 2006, when it was replaced by the second-generation E70 X5.
