What width does Genesis give for Noah's Ark?

The story behind the answer

Genesis gives Noah's Ark a width of 50 cubits.

The dimension appears in Genesis 6:15, alongside the Ark's length of 300 cubits and height of 30 cubits. Together, these figures describe a long, broad vessel intended to preserve Noah, his family, and the animals during the flood.

Because the ancient cubit was a unit based approximately on the length of a forearm, its exact value differed across cultures and periods. A commonly used estimate of about 45 centimetres would make 50 cubits approximately 22.5 metres, but that conversion is an estimate rather than a value specified by Genesis.

The width is sometimes confused with the height because both are smaller numbers in the same verse. The biblical order is length, width, then height: 300, 50, and 30 cubits. These dimensions are associated with the Ark itself, not the area of land covered by the flood.
