What wheeled vehicle did Leonardo da Vinci design to move by clockwork mechanisms?
Answer
Self-propelled cart
Answer
Self-propelled cart
Leonardo da Vinci designed a self-propelled cart powered by clockwork-like spring mechanisms.
The cart, usually dated to around 1478–1480, used coiled springs to drive its wheels. Steering could be set in advance through mechanisms similar to those used in theatrical stage machinery, allowing the vehicle to follow a predetermined route.
The device was probably intended for court entertainment rather than transportation. It is sometimes described as a robot because it could move without a person visibly pushing it, although it was a mechanical automaton rather than an autonomous machine in the modern sense.
A reconstructed cart was demonstrated in 2006 by researchers at the Institute and Museum of the History of Science in Florence. The surviving drawings do not show every construction detail, so modern replicas necessarily interpret parts of the mechanism.
