What wheeled invention did Leonardo da Vinci sketch that is often called an early robot?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci's mechanical knight is the wheeled invention often called an early robot.

Leonardo designed the humanoid automaton around 1495 for a pageant at the court of Ludovico Sforza in Milan. The knight was intended to sit, stand, move its arms, and operate its jaw. Cables, pulleys, and gears inside the armor translated motion from a hand-operated mechanism into movements of the figure.

The original device has not survived, so its exact performance is uncertain. Researchers reconstructed it from Leonardo's notebooks, especially drawings discovered in the Codex Atlanticus. In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working model based on the surviving evidence; later reconstructions were displayed in museums.

Calling it a robot is a modern description. Leonardo's machine was an automaton, meaning a self-moving mechanical figure, rather than an electronic robot. It is also separate from Leonardo's later mechanical lion, another automaton associated with a court spectacle.
