What was Vogue Italia called when it launched in 1964?

The story behind the answer

Vogue Italia was called Novità when it launched in 1964.

The Italian magazine had earlier publishing roots, but the title adopted the Vogue Italia name in 1964. That change established the edition as part of Condé Nast’s international Vogue network and connected it directly with the American Vogue brand.

Vogue Italia later became especially influential for experimental fashion photography and distinctive editorial concepts. Its reputation grew under editors including Franca Sozzani, who led the magazine from 1988 until her death in 2016.

Novità is therefore a historical predecessor name, not the title of a separate modern Vogue edition. The title is also easy to confuse with Italian fashion magazines such as L’Uomo Vogue, which was the men’s counterpart launched later.
