What was the wheelbase of the 1964 Jaguar E-Type?

The story behind the answer

The 1964 Jaguar E-Type had a 96-inch wheelbase. This measurement applied to the early two-seat fixed-head coupé and open two-seater versions that defined the original E-Type design.

The E-Type was launched in 1961 as Jaguar’s road-going successor to the D-Type racing car. Its monocoque-style body structure, independent suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, and long bonnet helped make it one of the most technically advanced sports cars of its period. In 1964, it still used the original 3.8-litre XK six-cylinder engine.

The main wheelbase mix-up comes from the later 2+2 coupé. Introduced in 1966, that version had a lengthened wheelbase to provide extra rear-seat and luggage space. It should not be used as the specification for a standard 1964 E-Type.

The 1964 cars are also notable as the final E-Types built with the 3.8-litre engine before Jaguar introduced the larger 4.2-litre unit in late 1964. The updated engine brought more torque and other practical improvements while retaining the same basic styling.
