The UN theme for International Women’s Day in 2024 was “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.”

The theme focused attention on the financing needed to advance gender equality and women’s well-being. UN messaging highlighted an estimated annual shortfall of about $360 billion in funding for gender-equality measures and linked investment in women to poverty reduction, economic development, peace, climate action, and stronger public services.

The wording is easy to mix up with other recent International Women’s Day themes. “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow” was used in 2022, while “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality” was the 2023 theme. “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world” belonged to 2021.

The 2024 campaign also aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 5, which calls for gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.
