What was the U.S. Hush Hush in WWII?
Answer
Admiral Nimitz's Jeep
Answer
Admiral Nimitz's Jeep
The U.S. “Hush Hush” in World War II was Admiral Nimitz’s Jeep, named USS Hush Hush.
The vehicle was assigned to Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, commander in chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during the war. A U.S. Navy archival photograph records Nimitz, officers, and enlisted personnel inspecting the Jeep at CINCPAC headquarters on Oahu, Hawaii, in June 1942. The image identifies the vehicle as USS Hush Hush and shows a four-star flag inside it.
The name was a playful reference to wartime secrecy, when military movements, commanders’ locations, and operational plans were carefully protected. “USS” normally identifies a commissioned U.S. Navy ship, so applying it to a Jeep was informal and humorous rather than an official naval classification.
This obscure fact is easy to confuse with the many secret weapons and intelligence projects of World War II. In this trivia wording, however, “Hush Hush” refers specifically to Nimitz’s named Jeep, not to the Manhattan Project, radar, or a classified aircraft program.
