What was the top speed of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren?

The story behind the answer

The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren had a top speed of 334 km/h in its standard roadster specification.

The SLR was a grand tourer created jointly by Mercedes-Benz and McLaren Automotive and produced from 2003 to 2010. Its name honored the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR racing car: “SLR” refers to “Sport Leicht Rennsport,” or “Sport Light Racing.”

A hand-built, supercharged 5.4-litre V8 produced 626 PS in the regular car. The SLR used a carbon-fibre-reinforced-plastic structure, a front-mid-engine layout, rear-wheel drive, and a five-speed automatic transmission. Those choices made it a very fast long-distance performance car as well as a technological showcase.

The 334 km/h figure is easy to confuse with the faster limited editions. The SLR 722 reached 337 km/h, while the 722 S roadster also had a claimed 334 km/h maximum. The standard coupé is commonly listed at 334 km/h, making that figure the expected answer when the question refers to the regular SLR McLaren rather than a special variant.
