What was the title of the first Pokémon Trading Card Game set?

The story behind the answer

The first Pokémon Trading Card Game set was called Base Set.

Created by Creatures Inc., Base Set was released in Japan on October 20, 1996. It arrived in the United States on January 9, 1999, after the Pokémon video games and anime had already built a large international audience.

The set contains 102 cards based on Pokémon from the first generation. Its cards include iconic versions of Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur, and Pikachu, making Base Set especially important to collectors and longtime fans.

Base Set is sometimes called the “Original Base Set” by collectors, particularly when distinguishing it from later reprints and anniversary products. Jungle and Fossil were also early Pokémon card expansions, but neither was the first set. In Japan, the product was known as the first starter and expansion pack.
