Answer
Commentarii de Bello Gallico
Julius Caesar’s account of the Gallic Wars was titled Commentarii de Bello Gallico, usually translated as “Commentaries on the Gallic War.” It describes his campaigns in Gaul and is one of the best-known works of Classical Latin.
The work covers Caesar’s wars from 58 to 50 BC and was written in the third person, with Caesar referring to himself as “Caesar” rather than “I.” That style gives the narrative an apparently detached tone, even though the book strongly presents Caesar as a capable commander acting in Rome’s interests.
The account opens with the famous statement “Gaul as a whole is divided into three parts.” It includes descriptions of Gallic and Germanic peoples, major battles, political negotiations, and Caesar’s expeditions across the Rhine and into Britain.
The work is also a political document. Caesar used it to explain and justify his campaigns to readers in Rome, so historians treat it as valuable evidence but also read it critically. The eighth book was written after Caesar’s seven books, traditionally by Aulus Hirtius.
