What was the title of J.K. Rowling’s first Harry Potter novel?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling’s first Harry Potter novel was Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Bloomsbury published the book in the United Kingdom on 26 June 1997. It introduces Harry Potter, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and the central conflict with Lord Voldemort.

The novel has a different title in the United States: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Scholastic changed the subtitle because its editors believed “sorcerer” would be more familiar to American readers. The story itself is the same, aside from some wording changes between editions.

The book became an international bestseller and launched a seven-novel series. Its success also led to film adaptations, translations, audiobooks, stage productions, and a large publishing franchise.
