Answer
Fairy Tales Told for Children
Hans Christian Andersen’s first fairy-tale collection, published in 1835, was titled Fairy Tales Told for Children. Its Danish title was Eventyr, fortalte for Børn.
The first installment appeared in Copenhagen on 8 May 1835. It contained four tales: “The Tinderbox,” “Little Claus and Big Claus,” “The Princess and the Pea,” and “Little Ida’s Flowers.” Andersen drew on oral storytelling, folklore and his own imaginative inventions rather than simply translating traditional tales.
The collection helped establish the literary fairy tale as Andersen’s signature form. Although the original title emphasized children, his stories quickly attracted adult readers too. The collection is sometimes confused with later expanded volumes, which included many of his best-known stories written after 1835.
