Frida Kahlo’s first solo exhibition in Mexico was titled Frida Kahlo.

The exhibition took place at the Galería de Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City in April 1953. It was Kahlo’s first and only solo exhibition in Mexico during her lifetime. By then, her health had seriously deteriorated, but she insisted on attending the opening.

Kahlo arrived in an ambulance and was carried into the gallery on her four-poster bed. The event became an important late-career moment because it placed her work before a Mexican audience on her own terms. It should not be confused with her 1938 New York exhibition or her 1939 Paris exhibition.
