Banksy placed the fake prehistoric-looking rock in the museum's Roman Britain gallery. It showed a stick figure hunting a wild animal, alongside a shopping trolley, creating the impression of a satirical cave painting. The work was displayed with a mock label that attributed it to an ancient period.

The piece remained unnoticed for several days before museum staff discovered it. Banksy's intervention used the authority of a major museum to question how institutions decide what counts as art, history or cultural value.

Peckham Rock is also known as Stonehenge, or simply the British Museum piece, in some accounts. It should not be confused with Banksy's later works that were officially exhibited or acquired by institutions.
