The theme of the 2022 Met Gala was “Gilded Glamour.”
The theme continued the Costume Institute’s two-part exploration of American fashion. The 2022 exhibition, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” presented historical American dress through period rooms at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
“Gilded Glamour” referred broadly to the Gilded Age, the period of rapid industrial growth and extreme wealth in the United States during the late nineteenth century. Guests were encouraged to interpret the era through elaborate, highly formal clothing.
The theme is sometimes confused with “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” which was the title of the first part of the institute’s American-fashion project and was associated with the 2021 gala. The two exhibitions were connected but had different titles.
