What was the surname of Tolkien’s fictional burglar Bilbo in The Hobbit?

The story behind the answer

Bilbo’s surname in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit is Baggins.

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who lives in Bag End, a comfortable home in Hobbiton. At the beginning of The Hobbit, he prefers a quiet routine, good meals, and the familiar customs of the Shire. Gandalf and Thorin Oakenshield’s company draw him into the expedition to reclaim Erebor from Smaug.

The name Baggins identifies Bilbo with the respectable, comfort-loving side of his family. His mother, Belladonna Took, gives him a Took connection associated with curiosity and adventurousness. Tolkien uses this family contrast to explain why Bilbo can seem both cautious and unexpectedly bold.

Baggins is sometimes confused with the surnames of other hobbit characters. Frodo, the central hobbit of The Lord of the Rings, is also a Baggins, while Samwise is a Gamgee and Merry is a Brandybuck. Bilbo’s surname is therefore a key link between Tolkien’s two major hobbit-centered narratives.
