What was the Soviet military campaign in Manchuria called in August 1945?

The story behind the answer

The Soviet military campaign in Manchuria in August 1945 was called Operation August Storm.

The operation began on August 9, 1945, when the Soviet Union invaded Japanese-held Manchuria and the puppet state of Manchukuo. Soviet forces also attacked Japanese positions in Inner Mongolia and northern Korea during the final phase of the Pacific War.

The campaign is also formally known as the Manchurian Strategic Offensive Operation. Soviet entry into the war against Japan, alongside the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, placed intense pressure on Japan's leaders and influenced the decision to surrender.

Operation August Storm is sometimes confused with Operation Downfall, the proposed Allied invasion of Japan's home islands. Downfall was never carried out because Japan surrendered before the invasion could begin.
