Answer
Operation August Storm
The Soviet invasion of Japanese-held Manchuria in August 1945 was also called Operation August Storm.
The campaign began on August 9, 1945, when Soviet forces attacked Japan’s puppet state of Manchukuo and related Japanese positions in Manchuria, Inner Mongolia, and northern Korea. Its formal military name was the Manchurian Strategic Offensive Operation.
Soviet forces attacked from several directions and rapidly overwhelmed the Kwantung Army, which had once been one of Japan’s strongest formations. The campaign occurred between the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and became a major factor in Japan’s decision to surrender.
Operation August Storm is a popular Western name, not the official Soviet designation. The offensive continued until September 2, when Japan signed its formal surrender, although the Kwantung Army’s main surrender occurred earlier.
