Operation August Storm
Answer
Operation August Storm
The Soviet campaign in Manchuria in August 1945 was commonly called Operation August Storm in the West.
The operation began on 9 August 1945, when Soviet forces invaded Japanese-held Manchuria and the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo. Soviet troops also attacked Japanese positions in Inner Mongolia, Korea, southern Sakhalin, and the Kuril Islands during the wider Soviet–Japanese War.
The campaign rapidly overwhelmed the Japanese Kwantung Army. Its timing added a major new military crisis for Japan, alongside the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Historians continue to debate how the separate pressures combined to produce Japan’s decision to surrender.
The operation is also known as the Manchurian Strategic Offensive Operation or the Manchurian Operation. “Operation August Storm” is a later Western label, not the original Soviet title.
