Answer
Operation August Storm
The Soviet 1945 offensive against Japanese forces in Manchuria is commonly called Operation August Storm.
The campaign began on August 9, 1945, when Soviet forces attacked Japanese positions across Manchuria from several directions. It is also described by its Soviet operational name, the Manchurian Strategic Offensive Operation.
The offensive overwhelmed the Kwantung Army, which Japan had stationed in Manchuria. Soviet forces also conducted operations in southern Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands during the final weeks of the war.
Operation August Storm is a modern English label associated with historian David Glantz and should not be confused with Operation Downfall, the proposed Allied invasion of Japan. The Soviet–Japanese War continued in some regions after Japan announced its surrender.
