What was the show's usual running time?

The story behind the answer

The Andy Griffith Show usually ran for 25–26 minutes.

That duration reflects the program’s actual content length, not its television time slot. CBS scheduled the sitcom in a half-hour format, but the half-hour also had to accommodate opening and closing credits plus commercial breaks. Like many American network sitcoms of the 1960s, the story itself therefore occupied roughly 25 minutes.

The series premiered on October 3, 1960, and ended on April 1, 1968, producing 249 episodes across eight seasons. Its first five seasons were filmed in black and white, while the final three were filmed in color. The format remained essentially the same even as the production changed visually.

A common mix-up is answering “30 minutes” because the show occupied a half-hour broadcast window. Thirty minutes describes the slot, while 25–26 minutes describes the program’s listed running time. The series was also sometimes described casually as a “half-hour show,” which can blur that distinction.
