Silk Sonic released “Skate” on July 30, 2021, as the second single from An Evening with Silk Sonic, the debut album by Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak. It followed “Leave the Door Open,” which introduced the duo’s polished, 1970s-inspired soul and R&B style.
“Skate” leans into disco, funk, and roller-rink imagery. Its lyrics invite listeners onto the dance floor, while the accompanying video shows Mars and .Paak performing outdoors as roller skaters move around them. The song was written by the duo with James Fauntleroy, D’Mile, Domi, and JD Beck; Mars and D’Mile handled production.
“Fly as Me,” “777,” and “Blast Off” are album tracks, but they were not released as the project’s second single. The single sequence is easiest to remember chronologically: “Leave the Door Open,” then “Skate,” followed by “Smokin out the Window.”
