The 1970 World Cup final ended with Brazil defeating Italy 4–1. Played on June 21, 1970, at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, the match gave Brazil its third World Cup title and established the team as the first nation to win the trophy three times.
Pelé opened the scoring with a powerful header in the 18th minute. Roberto Boninsegna equalized for Italy, but Brazil took control in the second half through goals from Gérson, Jairzinho, and captain Carlos Alberto. Carlos Alberto’s final goal, created by a flowing team move, remains one of the tournament’s most celebrated finishes.
Pelé’s goal made him the first player to score in two World Cup finals, having also scored twice against Sweden in 1958. The victory also allowed Brazil to keep the Jules Rimet Trophy permanently under the rules then in effect. The trophy was later stolen in Brazil in 1983 and was never recovered.
