What was the result listed for the Battle of Hastings?

The story behind the answer

The result listed for the Battle of Hastings was a Norman victory. William, Duke of Normandy, defeated Harold Godwinson’s English army on 14 October 1066, opening the way for the Norman Conquest of England.

Harold’s troops held a strong defensive position on Senlac Hill and initially resisted repeated Norman attacks. William’s army eventually used coordinated infantry, archery and cavalry, including feigned retreats that encouraged some English soldiers to leave the shield wall. The death of Harold, probably late in the fighting, helped trigger the collapse of organized English resistance.

Hastings was decisive, but it did not instantly place William in complete control. English leaders later proclaimed Edgar Ætheling king, and William had to campaign through southern England before receiving their submission. He was crowned king at Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day, 1066.

The battle is often treated as the single turning point of 1066, but it followed Harold’s exhausting victory over Harald Hardrada at Stamford Bridge. Hastings therefore formed part of a wider succession struggle involving English, Norman and Norwegian claims to the throne.
