Answer
Operation Olympic
Answer
Operation Olympic
The proposed Allied invasion of Kyushu was called Operation Olympic.
Operation Olympic was the first phase of Operation Downfall, the broader plan to invade Japan’s home islands. Planners scheduled the landing for November 1, 1945, and selected beaches on southern Kyushu as the main objectives. The operation was intended to secure airfields and establish a base for later attacks.
The second phase, Operation Coronet, was planned for Honshu near Tokyo in March 1946. Olympic and Coronet would have required vast numbers of Allied troops, ships, aircraft, and logistical supplies. Japanese forces were also preparing to defend Kyushu with regular troops, aircraft, naval craft, and civilian auxiliaries.
Japan’s surrender in August 1945 made the invasion unnecessary. Operation Olympic is often confused with Operation Neptune, the naval and amphibious component of the 1944 Normandy invasion, or with Operation Downfall, which was the umbrella plan covering both proposed Japanese invasions.
