What was the profession of Marie Curie's father?

The story behind the answer

Marie Curie’s father, Władysław Skłodowski, was a physics teacher.

Skłodowski taught physics and mathematics in secondary schools in Warsaw, where his work helped shape the intellectual environment of his family. He was also associated with biology, writing, and translation, but “physics teacher” is the clear profession asked for in this quiz.

His influence on Maria Skłodowska—later known as Marie Curie—was important. Because laboratory instruction was restricted in schools under Russian rule, he brought scientific equipment home and demonstrated experiments to his children. Maria developed an early interest in science, even though women in her homeland faced major barriers to university education.

The answer is sometimes broadened to “mathematics and physics teacher,” which is more complete but does not make “physics teacher” wrong. Władysław’s wife, Bronisława, was an educator and headmistress, so “teacher” was a defining profession in both branches of Marie’s family. Their daughter eventually became a two-time Nobel laureate in Physics and Chemistry.
