Operation Coronet
Answer
Operation Coronet
Operation Coronet was the planned second phase of Operation Downfall, aimed at Japan's main island Honshu.
Allied planners scheduled Coronet for March 1, 1946, after Operation Olympic's proposed invasion of southern Kyushu. The intended landing area was the Kanto Plain near Tokyo, where Allied forces hoped to establish control over Japan's political and industrial center.
Operation Downfall was never carried out. Japan's surrender followed the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Soviet declaration of war against Japan, and the emperor's decision to accept the Potsdam Declaration. These events made the planned invasion unnecessary.
Coronet is frequently mixed up with Olympic. Olympic referred to Kyushu, while Coronet referred to the later assault on Honshu. Both names belonged to Downfall, not to separate completed battles.
