Answer
Operation Olympic
Answer
Operation Olympic
The planned November 1945 invasion of Kyushu was called Operation Olympic.
Operation Olympic was the first phase of Operation Downfall, the proposed Allied invasion of Japan. It called for landings on southern Kyushu beginning on November 1, 1945, and was intended to establish bases for later operations against the rest of the Japanese home islands.
American planners expected Olympic to require hundreds of thousands of personnel, along with large quantities of ships, aircraft, vehicles, and supplies. The operation was designed around several landing areas and would have faced Japanese forces preparing to defend the island.
Olympic never took place because Japan accepted the Allied surrender terms in August 1945. The second phase of Downfall, Operation Coronet, was planned for Honshu and the Kanto Plain near Tokyo in March 1946. Olympic is therefore a historical plan, not a completed battle or invasion.
