What was the planned date for Operation Olympic, the first phase of the proposed invasion of Japan?

The story behind the answer

Operation Olympic was planned to begin on November 1, 1945.

Olympic was the first phase of Operation Downfall, the Allied plan for invading Japan’s home islands. It called for landings on southern Kyūshū, where Allied forces would seize airfields and establish positions for later operations. The plan was never carried out because Japan surrendered before the invasion date.

The second phase, Operation Coronet, was scheduled for March 1, 1946, and would have targeted the Kantō Plain near Tokyo. These planned operations involved enormous forces and anticipated severe casualties, although estimates varied substantially among planners and historians.

The atomic bombings, the Soviet Union’s entry into the war, and Japan’s internal surrender decision changed the military situation before Olympic could begin. Operation Olympic should not be confused with Coronet: Olympic concerned Kyūshū, while Coronet concerned the Tokyo region.
