What was the planned Allied operation to invade Japan’s island of Kyushu in World War II?

The story behind the answer

The planned Allied operation to invade Japan’s island of Kyushu in World War II was Operation Olympic.

Operation Olympic was the first phase of Operation Downfall, the proposed full-scale invasion of the Japanese home islands. Allied planners scheduled Olympic for 1 November 1945 and intended to land forces on Kyushu, Japan’s southwestern main island. The operation would have established bases and secured territory for a later assault.

The second phase, Operation Coronet, was planned for Honshu near Tokyo and was scheduled for March 1946. These plans were never carried out because Japan accepted the Allied surrender terms in August 1945 and formally signed the surrender instrument on 2 September.

Olympic was not the same as Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of German-occupied Normandy in June 1944. It also was not a battle that occurred. Military planners prepared detailed invasion concepts, force estimates, and casualty projections, but the end of the war made the proposed Kyushu landings unnecessary.
