Answer
Operation Coronet
Answer
Operation Coronet
Operation Coronet was the planned Allied operation for invading the Kanto Plain near Tokyo in 1946.
Coronet was the second major stage of Operation Downfall, following Operation Olympic’s planned assault on southern Kyushu. It was tentatively scheduled to begin on March 1, 1946, after Allied forces had secured airfields and staging areas in Kyushu.
The proposed landings would have attacked the Kanto Plain, the broad region surrounding Tokyo. The operation was expected to be larger than Olympic and would have involved forces from several Allied countries.
Coronet was never executed because Japan accepted the Allied surrender terms in August 1945. A common mistake is to call the entire invasion plan Coronet; Downfall was the overall plan, while Coronet referred specifically to the Tokyo-area phase.
