What was the planned Allied invasion of Kyushu, Japan, called?

The story behind the answer

The planned Allied invasion of Kyushu, Japan, was called Operation Olympic.

Operation Olympic was the first phase of Operation Downfall, the proposed Allied invasion of the Japanese home islands. It was scheduled to begin on November 1, 1945, with landings on Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost major home island. A second phase, Operation Coronet, was planned for Honshu near Tokyo in March 1946.

The invasion plans were developed because Japanese leaders had not yet accepted surrender and Allied planners expected fierce resistance. The Battle of Okinawa had demonstrated the potential cost of an assault near Japan, while Japanese preparations for homeland defense increased Allied concerns about casualties.

Operation Olympic was never carried out. Japan accepted the Potsdam Declaration in August 1945 after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet declaration of war. The formal surrender ceremony followed aboard USS Missouri on September 2, making the planned invasion unnecessary.
